Victory Is Biological Information

Winning is not positive thinking. Winning is an event that produces information.

The event says that effort altered reality. The brain then has to decide whether that result was luck, noise, or a reusable model. If the result is repeated under conditions that require action, the nervous system can begin to assign greater value to effort, greater probability to success, and lower inevitability to defeat. That shift is psychological only in the shallowest description. Underneath it are changes in synaptic strength, excitatory drive, inhibitory control, steroid signaling, stress hormone dynamics, metabolic support, and memory consolidation.

That is the winner effect.

Strengthening excitatory input to layer V pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex moves rank up. Weakening that input moves it down. This is bidirectional circuit control, not a motivational poster.

The circuit is the same tissue. Repeated outcomes get stored in the pathways that run effort and persistence.

The upward spiral is therefore not mystical. A controlled challenge produces action. Action produces feedback. Feedback updates predicted value. Successful control strengthens the probability of acting again. Repeated action creates more opportunities for skill, social trust, resource acquisition, and further wins. The spiral becomes real because each layer changes the conditions of the next layer.

The downward spiral is equally biological. Uncontrollable stress teaches that action is useless. A person can still be strong, intelligent, and capable, yet begin to conserve effort because the nervous system has learned a terrible equation: effort does not change outcome. That equation is not corrected by shame. It is corrected by experiences of control that are specific, credible, repeated, and remembered.

The point of this book is not to worship victory. It is to understand how agency becomes tissue.

CHAPTER 1

What the Winner Effect Actually Is

The winner effect is the increased probability of winning a future contest after winning a previous contest. The definition is behavioral. The mechanism is distributed.

In California mice, winning territorial disputes elevated testosterone and improved the chance of winning again. Subsequent work separated the social experience of victory from the post victory testosterone signal. Both contributed, and their effects were additive. That matters because a win is not one molecule. It is a synchronized event that can include sensory evidence, motor success, social position, steroid response, dopamine updating, and memory.

The first mistake is to reduce the winner effect to testosterone. Testosterone can participate, but it is not the whole effect. A person can have a high laboratory value and remain behaviorally disorganized. Another can show ordinary circulating hormones yet possess exceptional skill, prefrontal control, and tolerance for uncertainty. Hormone concentration is one layer. Receptor density, local metabolism, binding proteins, enzyme expression, neural context, prior learning, and the meaning of the contest all modify the signal.

The second mistake is to reduce it to confidence. Confidence can be accurate or delusional. The winner effect requires calibration. A nervous system learns best when prediction and result are compared. If I predict that a task will be impossible, complete it, and record what actually happened, the prediction model has to update. If I chant that I am unbeatable while avoiding measurement, no corrective information enters the system.

The third mistake is to confuse domination with competence. Social rank in rodents is experimentally useful because it creates repeated measurable contests. Human wins are broader. Finishing a difficult training block, keeping a promise, resolving a conflict, learning a technical skill, completing a sale, recovering from a setback, and speaking accurately under pressure can all provide evidence of control. The common variable is that organized action changed an outcome.

The fourth mistake is to believe that any stress makes a person stronger. Stress without agency can produce sensitization, sleep disruption, impaired working memory, and helplessness. It is whether the organism could discover a response that mattered.

An authentic win has five components.

  1. There is uncertainty. A guaranteed ritual contains little new information.
  2. There is agency. The result must depend meaningfully on behavior.
  3. There is feedback. The nervous system needs a legible signal of success or failure.
  4. There is relevance. The outcome must matter enough to recruit attention and valuation.
  5. There is consolidation. Sleep, repetition, and recall must preserve the lesson.

Remove uncertainty and the event becomes empty. Remove agency and it becomes luck. Remove feedback and it becomes ambiguous. Remove relevance and dopamine updating weakens. Remove consolidation and the win never becomes a durable prior.

This is why fake wins fail. Clicking a trivial box can help initiate movement, but a life built entirely from trivial completions teaches trivial competence. The challenge has to grow. The nervous system needs a rising sequence of credible proofs.

I use the phrase win stack for that sequence. A win stack is not a list of affirmations. It is a chain of completed actions in which each result makes the next action more likely. The stack can begin embarrassingly small. It cannot remain small forever.

CHAPTER 2

The Circuit That Remembers a Win

The medial prefrontal cortex is not a single command center. It contains cell classes, layers, projections, inhibitory microcircuits, and state dependent patterns. Yet the experimental winner effect repeatedly points toward prefrontal control because competition requires persistence, effort allocation, response selection, and suppression of premature retreat.

In the 2011 mouse study, social rank tracked the strength of excitatory synaptic input onto layer V pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex. Experimentally increasing synaptic efficacy raised rank. Decreasing it lowered rank. Layer V neurons are important because they send output to subcortical and cortical targets. When their input output relationship changes, behavior can change downstream.

The 2017 study refined the map. The mediodorsal thalamus supplies a projection to dorsomedial prefrontal cortex that was active during effortful competition. Optogenetic activation promoted winning, inhibition promoted losing, and synaptic potentiation preserved the effect of prior wins.

Think of the mediodorsal thalamus as a context and action partner for prefrontal computation, not as a simple relay. The projection can help hold task relevant information, integrate state with strategy, and support persistent action. A win changes the future partly because the circuit representing useful effort has been modified.

At the synapse, a simplified sequence looks like this.

Glutamate is released from a presynaptic terminal. AMPA receptors conduct sodium and depolarize the postsynaptic membrane. Sufficient depolarization relieves the magnesium block of NMDA receptors. Calcium enters through NMDA receptors. Calcium activates kinases including CaMKII and engages signaling that can increase AMPA receptor insertion, alter spine structure, and recruit transcription. Repeated, appropriately timed activity can therefore make later transmission more effective.

That is the molecular skeleton of a stored win. The next contest starts in a different brain than the last one.

Prefrontal excitation must also be balanced. More excitation is not automatically more control. A study that removed TrkB signaling from corticolimbic GABA interneurons after birth produced excitation and inhibition imbalance in layer V medial prefrontal cortex and increased social dominance in male mice. Correcting the imbalance optogenetically normalized the behavior. This is a warning against slogans such as more BDNF equals more dominance. BDNF and TrkB act in cell specific networks. A molecule can support plasticity in one context and destabilize computation in another.

Another prefrontal microcircuit uses disinhibition. Inhibitory neurons inhibit other inhibitory neurons, temporarily releasing selected pyramidal output. Social competition can depend on this gating logic. The principle is important: control is not maximal activation. Control is selective activation at the correct moment.

The nucleus accumbens also participates in dominance through separable neural populations. This region integrates value, action, and motivational state. It communicates with dopamine systems and motor output. The winner effect therefore emerges from a network that decides whether effort is valuable, whether action should continue, and whether retreat is the better policy.

Human evidence is less causal. Winning against another person can recruit ventromedial prefrontal and striatal signals differently from winning against a computer. Monetary and competitive outcomes alter risk behavior in some experiments. Social meaning modifies reward processing. The win is stored.

Repeated wins potentiate the circuits that run effort and social competition. Use them.

The practical implication is that a win should be encoded, not merely enjoyed. Name the action that worked. Identify the obstacle. Record the evidence. Repeat the relevant behavior soon enough that the circuit receives another correlated event. A win that is never analyzed can remain luck. A win that reveals a controllable rule can become strategy.

CHAPTER 3

Controllability Versus Helplessness

The most important variable in stress is not intensity alone. It is controllability.

In classic rodent work, an animal that could terminate a stressor by performing a response was protected from many later consequences seen in an animal receiving the same physical stress without control. The sensory insult could be matched. The learned meaning differed.

The medial prefrontal cortex is central to that distinction. In rats, prefrontal activity determined whether control over stress restrained later behavioral consequences and activation of the dorsal raphe nucleus. Prior experience with control also protected against the effects of a later uncontrollable stressor.

That immunization later raises social dominance. Control over stress is not a mood trick. It is a rank precursor.

The same physical load therefore writes two different chemistries. If action terminates the event, prefrontal and striatal dopamine stay assigned to work. If it does not, the raphe owns the state.

Forced chaos and chosen difficulty are not the same input. A hard session with a stop condition and a readable result is a controllable challenge. An environment where effort never changes punishment installs the raphe phenotype. Both raise mediators. Only one encodes agency.

Helplessness is not a character defect. After inescapable load, passivity is the default. vmPFC has to detect a response that actually terminates the event. The organism is conserving action because action has been priced at zero.

This matters for rebuilding. Motivation speeches target the output. Control training targets the model.

A credible control experience has a response that is discoverable. The result follows the response closely enough to be assigned to it. The difficulty is real but not random. The person can distinguish execution error from uncontrollable noise. The next attempt can change one variable.

When someone is buried in uncontrollable stress, the correct first win may be small. That is not weakness. It is circuit rehabilitation. The size of the challenge can rise once action again predicts outcome.

The error is to stay in rehabilitation forever. Endless tiny tasks can become another form of avoidance. Once control is restored, the arena must expand. The prefrontal cortex needs escalating proof that the model generalizes.

Control is the variable. A usable response under pressure trains the prefrontal brake. Perceived control lights up ventromedial prefrontal cortex. That is the circuit reading agency.

Pressure without agency teaches futility. Pressure with a usable response trains regulation. Control is the feature.

More stress is not the goal. More control under progressively meaningful stress is the goal.

CHAPTER 4

Dopamine, Effort, and Prediction Error

Midbrain dopamine neurons report prediction error: obtained minus expected. A win against a low prior is a large error. Effort gets priced up. That is the learning signal, not a treat.

Midbrain dopamine neurons can signal reward prediction error, the difference between expected and obtained outcomes. When an outcome is better than predicted, activity can rise. When an expected outcome fails to arrive, activity can fall. With learning, the signal shifts toward cues that predict the outcome. The foundational primate experiments are.

This creates a learning signal. A surprising win is powerful because it contradicts a low prior. If the person expected failure and succeeded through identifiable action, the error is large. Repetition then reduces surprise while strengthening the predictive value of cues, strategies, and effort.

Dopamine also relates to the value of work. Fast fluctuations in accumbal dopamine tracked the moment by moment value of future work in rodents. This supports a more useful model than pleasure. Dopamine helps allocate action toward outcomes that appear worth the cost.

The winner effect can therefore become an effort effect. A win increases the predicted return on organized action. Greater predicted return makes effort easier to initiate. More effort creates more exposure to corrective feedback. Skill improves. Further wins become more likely.

That spiral fails when the reward is detached from the action. Random validation can feel good without teaching skill. Compulsive stimulation can produce salience without building control. The nervous system learns the cue that actually predicts the outcome. If the cue is an app notification, the learning attaches to the app. If the cue is deliberate preparation followed by a measurable result, the learning can attach to preparation.

This is why immediate artificial rewards can compete with long projects. The problem is not moral impurity. It is temporal credit assignment. A delayed outcome is harder to assign to the correct action. The solution is to create honest intermediate feedback without pretending an unfinished project is finished.

Use milestones that correspond to irreversible progress. A chapter drafted, a set completed with correct form, a client contacted, a technical test passed, a conversation initiated. Each milestone should prove a change in the world.

Prediction error also explains why success must escalate. If every task becomes guaranteed, little new learning occurs. The target should remain difficult enough to generate information but controlled enough that strategy matters. There is no universal percentage. The correct difficulty is the level at which errors remain interpretable and effort remains consequential.

Do not chase dopamine. Construct conditions in which dopamine has something worth learning.

CHAPTER 5

The Stress System Learns Context

The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis coordinates a major endocrine response to challenge. Hypothalamic corticotropin releasing hormone promotes pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone. The adrenal cortex releases cortisol in humans and mainly corticosterone in common rodent models. These glucocorticoids mobilize energy, alter immune activity, influence memory, and feed back to the brain.

Cortisol is not poison. A functioning organism needs glucocorticoid signaling. The problem is loss of timing, context, recovery, and control.

Acute challenge can sharpen selected processes while impairing others. High catecholamine and glucocorticoid states can weaken prefrontal working memory and favor habitual or threat related responding. In healthy people, acute psychosocial stress reduced working memory related dorsolateral prefrontal activity.

A win can alter the meaning of arousal. The pounding heart that previously predicted collapse can begin to predict mobilization. This is not imaginary. Interoceptive signals are interpreted through learned context. The same sympathetic activation can be coded as danger, excitement, or readiness depending on predicted control and outcome.

Recovery is where the new prediction is protected. If every win is followed by sleep loss, stimulant escalation, and another uncontrollable demand, the nervous system receives mixed evidence. The contest was controlled, but the environment remains unsafe.

Sleep restriction can raise evening cortisol and disturb its normal decline. One week of short sleep reduced daytime testosterone in healthy young men in a small laboratory study. Those findings do not make sleep a hormone hack. They show that endocrine context is inseparable from recovery.

Stress also interacts with neurosteroids. Progesterone derived allopregnanolone can increase during acute stress in animals and modulate GABA A receptors. Five alpha reductase enzymes in prefrontal cortex respond to acute stress. This is not proof that all stress is good. It shows that the brain possesses local steroid pathways that participate in adaptation.

An adaptive challenge has a beginning, a response, an outcome, and an end. Chronic ambiguous threat has none of these boundaries. The first trains performance. The second consumes prediction machinery without resolution.

The winner effect becomes resilient when arousal is repeatedly paired with control and followed by recovery. The goal is not a permanently calm nervous system. The goal is a nervous system that can mobilize hard, preserve executive control, then return.

CHAPTER 6

DHT, Androgen Receptors, and Sensitivity

Dihydrotestosterone is usually flattened into a caricature about hair, aggression, or masculinity. The actual biology is more interesting.

Steroid synthesis begins with cholesterol. Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein moves cholesterol toward the inner mitochondrial membrane. CYP11A1 converts cholesterol into pregnenolone. Additional enzymes then generate progesterone, adrenal androgens, testosterone, estrogens, and other steroids according to tissue and cell type.

Testosterone can bind the androgen receptor directly. It can also be converted by 5α reductase into DHT. The relevant genes are SRD5A1 and SRD5A2, with expression varying across tissues. DHT cannot be aromatized into estradiol. It is therefore a potent terminal androgen in the classical androgen receptor branch, although it can still be metabolized into neuroactive descendants.

The androgen receptor is a ligand activated transcription factor. In the absence of ligand, it associates with chaperone proteins. Ligand binding changes receptor conformation, promotes nuclear translocation, and permits interaction with androgen response elements and transcriptional machinery. The result depends on receptor abundance, coactivators, corepressors, chromatin accessibility, local steroid concentration, and cell identity.

This is why a blood hormone number cannot explain a brain state by itself. Circulating testosterone is a substrate and signal. Local 5α reductase can change how much becomes DHT. Local receptor abundance can change how strongly the same concentration is read. Enzymes that metabolize DHT can route it toward molecules with different receptor preferences.

DHT can be converted into 3α androstanediol and 3β androstanediol through hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase pathways. The 3α metabolite can positively modulate GABA A receptors. The 3β metabolite can signal through estrogen receptor beta. In male rodents, DHT and 3β androstanediol reduced hypothalamic pituitary adrenal responses through estrogen receptor beta related mechanisms. Androgen metabolites with estrogen receptor beta activity also produced anxiolytic and cognitive effects in rodents.

The point is not that DHT is secretly estrogen. The point is that steroid identity changes as metabolism proceeds. Testosterone, DHT, 3α androstanediol, and 3β androstanediol are not interchangeable. One can favor classical androgen receptor signaling. Another can alter GABA A currents. Another can engage estrogen receptor beta. The phenotype is the integrated result.

How does this connect to winning?

In California mice, territorial victories raise androgen receptor in the BNST, nucleus accumbens, and ventral tegmental area. Receptor density tracks the winner index. That is a louder DHT channel in the exact circuits that run motivation and aggression.

The post-win androgen pulse is causal. A short testosterone injection after a fight raises next-day aggression. Blocking aromatase does not stop that effect, so the androgen receptor and DHT branch are doing the work, not conversion to estradiol. A win without the pulse does not build the same later aggression.

Wins tell the brain to listen harder to DHT. DHT tells the next contest to last longer. That loop is the winner effect.

The useful target is androgen competence. Energy, protein, minerals, sleep, resistance training, and real contests keep the enzymes and receptors online. The win tells those receptors what the hormone is for.

CHAPTER 7

Progesterone, Allopregnanolone, and GABA A

Progesterone is a substrate in men. The adrenals, gonads, and nervous system make it. It becomes allopregnanolone. That is a brake on the network, not a gender costume.

Progesterone has at least two broad signaling lives.

In the classical life, progesterone binds nuclear progesterone receptors and alters transcription. Receptor isoforms, cofactors, and tissue context shape the result.

In the neurosteroid life, progesterone becomes a substrate. Five alpha reductase converts it into 5α dihydroprogesterone. A 3α hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase step then produces allopregnanolone. Allopregnanolone does not need the classical progesterone receptor to exert its best known rapid neural effect. It positively modulates GABA A receptors.

GABA A receptors are chloride conducting ion channels assembled from multiple subunits. Their composition affects location, kinetics, and steroid sensitivity. Synaptic receptors generate fast phasic inhibition. Extrasynaptic receptors, often containing delta subunits in certain neurons, can generate tonic inhibition. Neuroactive steroids can powerfully enhance this tonic brake.

The consequence is not simply sedation. Inhibition changes network gain. It can reduce noise, constrain runaway excitation, modify oscillations, alter threat responsiveness, and determine which signals survive competition. An efficient winner state requires enough excitation to act and enough inhibition to prevent the system from fragmenting.

Acute stress increases brain concentrations of GABA active steroids. This can be understood as an adaptive braking response. Mobilization raises neural demand. Neurosteroids can help prevent arousal from becoming uncontrolled excitation.

The attached study adds another layer. Acute swim stress increased the messenger RNA and protein abundance of both 5α reductase isozymes in prefrontal cortex of adult male rats. Because 5α reductase is required for the progesterone to allopregnanolone route, the result suggests that local steroidogenic capacity can respond to stress.

But the study did not measure resilience. It did not measure winning. It did not administer progesterone. It did not demonstrate that allopregnanolone was responsible for a behavioral advantage.

It measured enzyme expression after an acute stressor. The mechanistic implication is real. The grander claim remains unproven.

Allopregnanolone is also not a molecule for simplistic maximization. GABA A receptor subunit composition can change across hormonal states. Rapid rises, sustained exposure, and withdrawal can produce different outcomes. In some contexts, altered neurosteroid sensitivity is associated with anxiety or mood symptoms rather than calm. The nervous system responds to pattern, not merely amount.

Men run this pathway every day. Age, stress, sleep, alcohol, and enzyme variation shift the flux. Time the brake. Do not ignore it.

Progesterone and DHT also share a biochemical gate. Both can be generated through 5α reductase dependent reactions from different substrates. That does not mean the two pathways are a simple tug of war. Isozyme distribution, substrate access, tissue compartment, and downstream enzyme activity determine flux.

The winner effect needs a brake as much as an accelerator. Dopamine can increase the expected value of work. Glutamate can strengthen a useful synapse. Androgen signaling can alter motivation and sensitivity. Allopregnanolone can stabilize inhibitory tone. Cortisol can mobilize fuel. The successful state is the timing of these systems, not the worship of one.

Never interpret low fear as automatic strength. Excess inhibition can flatten learning and initiative. Never interpret high arousal as automatic power. Excess excitation can destroy accuracy. The resilient nervous system enters high output without losing selection.

CHAPTER 8

The 5α Reductase Switch

Read the enzyme paper for what it measured.

Acute stress raises the enzyme. That is the usable fact.

The stimulus was acute swim stress, not a lifetime of defeat.

Expression rose. That is messenger RNA and protein, not a guarantee of every downstream steroid change.

Expression is not the same as flux. More messenger RNA and more protein can increase capacity, but actual product formation still depends on substrate, enzyme activity, cellular localization, cofactors, competing pathways, and time. The study did not directly quantify every downstream steroid.

Five alpha reductase sits at a branch point with two relevant routes.

Progesterone enters the 5α reduced pathway and can become allopregnanolone, a GABA A modulator.

Testosterone enters the 5α reduced pathway and becomes DHT, an androgen receptor ligand that can also generate neuroactive metabolites.

The same enzyme family therefore connects stress adaptation to both inhibitory neurosteroid biology and androgen biology. That is biochemically insane in the correct sense. One local enzymatic gate can reshape the meaning of two major steroid substrates.

The serious inference is this: stress can alter the local machinery that controls steroid metabolism in prefrontal cortex. The brain is not merely exposed to hormones made elsewhere. It can transform steroid signals locally.

That changes how we think about a blood test. A serum value is the concentration arriving at the tissue. The tissue still decides what to do with it. Enzyme expression, receptor abundance, and downstream metabolism create a local endocrine dialect.

Victory may also change that dialect. Animal wins can increase androgen receptor expression in motivation circuits. Acute stress can increase 5α reductase expression in prefrontal cortex.

Control under pressure coordinates prefrontal activity with local steroid metabolism and receptor sensitivity. Later mobilization gets cheaper. That is the loop.

The enzyme is the switch. Use it.

CHAPTER 9

Breath, Tongue, and Endogenous DMT

The contest needs a brain that is perfused and oxygenated. Food pays the substrate bill. Breath, tongue, and palate move the blood, CSF, and air that deliver it.

This chapter is how to do the work. Kechari, intraoral thumb pulling, nostril breathing, and endogenous DMT sit outside the usual winner-effect papers. The blood-flow, CO2, suture-stem-cell, and hypoxia literature is real. Use these before the arena. They are not the arena.

Cerebral Blood Flow Is Mechanical

Brain arterioles constrict when arterial CO2 falls and dilate when it rises. That is the Bohr/CO2 relationship at the vessel wall, not a mood. Fast shallow breathing or forced hyperventilation dumps CO2, cerebral vessels narrow, prefrontal tissue underperfuses, and you get lightheaded right when you need control. Slow nasal breathing keeps PaCO2 in a usable range. The diaphragm also pumps CSF.

Deep abdominal yogic breathing immediately increases cranially directed CSF velocities and the respiratory share of CSF pulsation at the foramen magnum. Pranayama changes middle cerebral artery flow under Doppler. Rapid Kapalabhati-type work tends toward CO2 washout. Slow and held work moves the system the other way.

How to breathe for perfusion. Sit or stand tall. Tongue on the palate when you are not thumb-pulling. Inhale through the nose 4 to 6 seconds into the belly and lower ribs. Exhale through the nose 6 to 8 seconds, quiet, no blow. Do not empty until you see stars. Optional: after a full nasal inhale, hold 5 to 10 seconds, then long exhale. That raises CO2 a little, keeps vessels open, and loads the hold without panic. 8 to 12 minutes. Stop if you tingle, cramp, or go dizzy. Those are hypocapnia signs. Sit, breathe slow, wait.

Contest-day rule: do not blow off CO2. No Wim Hof stacks, no panting, no rapid kapalabhati before you need prefrontal control. Those dump carbonic acid, raise pH, clamp cerebral arterioles, and make the win harder.

Nostril Breathing

Right-nostril yoga breathing raises oxygenated hemoglobin and blood volume in the left prefrontal cortex compared with breath awareness and left-nostril breathing. Left prefrontal tissue is planning, verbal output, and the control you need in a ranked contest.

How. Sit tall. Close the left nostril with the ring finger. Slow inhale and exhale through the right only, same 4-6 / 6-8 timing as above. 5 to 10 minutes before a contest that needs focus. Alternate-nostril is for later, recovery. Right-nostril is daytime drive. Keep the mouth closed. If the right side is blocked, do not force it through mucus. Clear it, then work, or use both nostrils slow until it opens.

Kechari Mudra

Kechari is the tongue lock. Beginner form is enough. Tip of the tongue presses the soft palate, not the hard palate behind the teeth. Hold it while you breathe through the nose. The tongue stays back for the session. That loads cranial nerves IX, X, and XII and changes swallow and vagal tone. Treat the amrita / pineal lore as lore. Treat the mechanical loop as real: tongue, palate, vagus, breath.

If you cannot practice kechari yet, do myofunctional therapy and tongue exercises until you can. That is it.

How to get there. Once a day, stretch first: tongue straight out, then up toward the nose, then left, then right. Hold each 10 to 30 seconds. Over weeks the frenulum lengthens and the tip reaches farther. Then sit, tongue on the soft palate, light chin tuck without choking the throat, slow nasal breath 5 to 15 minutes. Advanced classical work takes the tongue up over the soft palate into the nasopharynx. Cutting the frenulum is optional and extreme. Do not cut anything. Do not force the tip until it bleeds. If the jaw shakes, drop the hold, stretch, come back.

Pairing. After thumb pulling, kechari is the hold that keeps the vault recruited while you breathe. Do not kechari and thumb-pull at the same time. The tongue has to get out of the way for the thumbs.

Thumb Pulling

Thumb pulling is intraoral. Clean thumbs on the hard palate. You pull outward and slightly forward on the roof of the mouth so the midpalatal suture and the maxillary vault take directional tension. This is palate work. Not neck traction. Not arm stretching.

Setup. Wash hands. Sit or stand. Jaw soft, teeth apart, lips relaxed. Place both thumbs on the hard palate behind the front teeth, one on each side of the midline, pads on bone, not on the teeth, not on the gums. Tongue rests low or out of the mouth. Breathe through the nose the whole time. If you cannot nasal-breathe, stop the session and clear the nose first. Mouth breathing while you wrench the palate trains the wrong airway.

Cyclic Force, Not a Static Wrench

The suture does not want a hard hold. Bone-lining and suture stem cells read intermittent tension. In culture, low-magnitude cyclic stretch, on the order of a few percent strain at low frequency, drives osteoblast differentiation. Higher frequency and bigger stretch start killing cells. Clinical expanders also work in pulses: tension, pause, tissue catch-up. Your thumbs should copy that class of input: short directional pulses, then slack.

Directional tension on the midpalatal suture is the signal. Bone-suture stem cells under mechanical tension shift to osteogenesis. Cyclic stretch at low magnitude drives osteoblast differentiation in human jaw periosteal stem cells. Cyclic mechanical stretch amplifies BMP9 osteogenesis in mesenchymal stem cells and raises osteogenic potential through Cdkn1a suppression. The stretch routes through Wnt5a/FZD4 and through Piezo channels in maxillary expansion models. Piezo1/2 are the membrane proteins that turn a pull into calcium and osteogenic transcription. Pulse. Each cycle is about 2 seconds. Inhale nasal, apply a firm lateral and slightly forward pull, maybe 1 to 2 kg of feel, not a crack. Exhale nasal, ease to 20 to 30 percent of that tension, do not let the thumbs fly off. Repeat. That is roughly 0.5 Hz, the same low-frequency window the periosteal stem-cell work used. Do not park at max tension for a minute. Static crush is the wrong input. Do not twist. Do not lever off the incisors. The force vector is out and a little forward on the vault, both sides even.

Dose. 3 to 5 minutes a side-pair, which is both thumbs at once. One or two sessions a day. Morning and before the contest is enough. Rest one day if the palate is tender the next morning. Tenderness that fades is load. Sharp pain, popping, bleeding, tooth mobility, or sinus stab is stop.

Safety

Stop for: active orthodontic expander, recent palatal or nasal surgery, cleft, loose front teeth, bleeding gums, oral infection, sinus infection, pregnancy if it makes you nauseous, dizziness, visual sparkles from breath-holding, or any crack you can hear. Do not use tools, hooks, or extra leverage. Thumbs only. Do not combine with rapid hyperventilation. Do not do this drunk. Do not do this with dirty hands. Rinse the mouth after if you want. If a tooth moves, you pulled on the tooth. Move the pads back onto the vault and drop the load.

Maximize without wrecking it. Same time each day. Cyclic, not heroic. Nasal breath during the pulses so CO2 stays up and the airway is the thing you are training. Follow with kechari and slow right-nostril or both-nostril breathing so the new range is used, not parked. Sleep on the back or side with the mouth closed if you can. Mouth tape is optional; nasal patency is not. Growth is slow. Suture remodeling is weeks to months. Treat it like progressive overload of bone, not a one-session crack.

Why the Palate Feeds the Win

Expanding the maxillary vault opens nasal and upper-airway volume and improves nasal ventilation. That is the breathing payoff. Mouth breathing collapses the face and starves night recovery. Nasal breathing keeps CO2, nitric oxide, and prefrontal perfusion in a range you can fight in.

A wider nose makes slow nasal and right-nostril work usable under arousal. Better night nasal breathing consolidates the day's prediction-error learning in sleep. The same prefrontal tissue that ranks contests needs oxygen and stable CO2. Thumb pulling is upstream plumbing. It does not replace the contest. It makes the contest less hypoxic.

Endogenous DMT

N,N-dimethyltryptamine is not only a plant alkaloid. It is an endogenous trace amine. It binds the sigma-1 receptor, an ER-mitochondria chaperone that regulates ion channels and cellular stress responses. DMT protects human cortical neurons and immune cells under severe hypoxia through sigma-1 activation. In that frame it is a stress-survival ligand, not a party drug.

Exogenous DMT and ayahuasca hit 5-HT2A hard and rewrite perception. That is a different experiment from endogenous sigma-1 signaling under oxygen stress. If you use exogenous DMT, treat it as a separate high-impact intervention. Do not stack a breakthrough dose on a high-stakes contest the same day and call it training.

For this protocol the relevant move is the other direction: change cranial blood flow, CO2, and hypoxia tolerance with breath, kechari, and cyclic palatal load. Endogenous DMT is part of the mammalian stress chemistry that may meet that environment. You do not need a pipe to take the physiology seriously.

How to Run It

  1. Clear the nose. Sit tall. Slow nasal breath 2 minutes.
  2. Intraoral thumb pull, cyclic 2-second pulses, 3 to 5 minutes. Thumbs on the vault, not the teeth.
  3. Kechari: tongue on the soft palate, light chin tuck, slow nasal breath 5 to 10 minutes. Cannot reach it: myofunctional therapy and tongue exercises until you can.
  4. Right-nostril breathing 5 minutes if the contest needs left-prefrontal drive. Otherwise both nostrils slow.
  5. Enter the arena. Do not hyperventilate on the way in.
  6. After: food, dark sleep, mouth closed.

These tools prepare perfusion and airway. The win still has to be performed and recorded.

CHAPTER 10

Energy, Lactate, Mitochondria, and Sleep

Plasticity is expensive.

Every action potential requires ion gradients. Sodium potassium ATPase restores those gradients by hydrolyzing ATP. Vesicle loading, neurotransmitter release, receptor trafficking, cytoskeletal remodeling, protein synthesis, and gene transcription all consume energy. A brain asked to learn under pressure needs fuel, oxygen delivery, mitochondrial capacity, and recovery.

Glucose is a major substrate, but the story is not simply brain burns sugar. Astrocytes store glycogen, take up glucose, regulate extracellular ions, and participate in glutamate recycling. During learning, astrocytic glycogen can be mobilized and lactate can be exported through monocarboxylate transporters. Neurons take up lactate through MCT2 and can oxidize it or use it as a signaling substrate.

In animal experiments, disrupting astrocyte to neuron lactate transport impaired long term memory formation. Restoring lactate rescued the deficit. Astrocyte lactate is part of memory. Fuel the cells that store the win.

Inside mitochondria, acetyl CoA enters the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Reducing equivalents deliver electrons to the respiratory chain. The proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane powers ATP synthase. Calcium, redox state, substrate supply, and membrane potential all influence output.

Mitochondria also signal. They shape calcium, reactive oxygen species, steroid synthesis, apoptosis, innate immune responses, and gene expression. Experimental manipulation of mitochondrial function alters neuroendocrine, metabolic, inflammatory, and transcriptional responses to acute stress. The stress response is therefore partly an energetic phenotype.

Reactive oxygen species are not pure damage. At controlled levels they act as signals. Excess production or inadequate defense can damage lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. The aim is not to annihilate oxidation. It is to maintain a redox environment compatible with signaling and repair.

Energy availability also shapes endocrine output. Chronic underfeeding can reduce thyroid and reproductive signaling, impair sleep, and lower training capacity. Excessive intake can impair insulin sensitivity and sleep through a different route. The winner effect needs energy matched to actual work.

Protein supplies amino acids for enzymes, receptors, transporters, and structural proteins. Glycine participates in collagen and inhibitory neurotransmission. Taurine affects osmoregulation, membranes, and calcium handling. Choline supports phosphatidylcholine synthesis and acetylcholine. Creatine buffers high energy phosphate through phosphocreatine. These molecules support capacity. None substitutes for the experience of control.

Sleep converts capacity into memory.

During sleep, neural activity is reorganized. Slow oscillations, spindles, hippocampal replay, cortical reactivation, and synaptic regulation contribute to consolidation depending on the memory system. A win followed by sleep can become a more stable model. A win followed by repeated sleep loss may remain emotionally vivid while its strategic details decay. The person remembers the high but fails to extract the rule.

Sleep also affects steroids. Testosterone rose during sleep and fell during waking in a laboratory study. Short sleep reduced daytime testosterone in a controlled study of young men. Cortisol timing can also shift with restriction.

This is why late night overstimulation is not a harmless celebration of discipline. If the goal is a stronger winner circuit, sleep is part of the training event.

Circadian timing begins with light. Retinal melanopsin containing ganglion cells detect environmental illumination and signal the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Bright daytime light can increase alertness and influence prefrontal activity. Human prefrontal cortex contains responses that track light intensity. The practical sequence is simple. Light establishes daytime. Food and movement supply energy demand. A controllable challenge creates learning. Darkness and sleep consolidate it. Break the sequence repeatedly and no isolated food can rescue the architecture.

CHAPTER 11

Epigenetics, the Gut, and Royal Jelly

The word epigenetic attracts nonsense because it sounds like a secret control panel. The real biology is stricter.

Chromatin regulates access to DNA. Histone acetylation generally reduces the positive charge on histone lysines and can increase accessibility in specific contexts. Histone acetyltransferases add acetyl groups. Histone deacetylases remove them. The effect of inhibiting one enzyme depends on cell type, locus, timing, and the other proteins present.

Gut dysbiosis predisposes toward subordinate behavior in competition. Transfer the microbiota and you transfer part of the rank. Clostridium butyricum or microbiota from dominant animals restore it. HDAC2 in a restricted medial prefrontal cell population is a mediator tied to synaptic activity.

Gut state reaches prefrontal chromatin and rank. The microbiome is not decoration. It is upstream of the circuit that decides whether to compete.

Microbial metabolites are one possible bridge. Butyrate can act as a short chain fatty acid, an energy substrate for colon cells, a receptor ligand, and an inhibitor of some histone deacetylases at sufficient concentration. Immune signals, vagal pathways, bile acids, tryptophan metabolites, and barrier integrity add other routes. The gut brain axis is not one cable.

Royal jelly is queen food. That is the point.

The nervous system is built from food. The contest is still what trains it.

The diet is the Primal Diet. The full archive is aajonus.net. The foods are raw milk, raw cream, raw eggs, raw meat, raw fat, raw marrow, unheated honey, raw unfrozen royal jelly, and fresh pollen. Not freeze-dried powders, not pasteurized dairy, and not cooked versions of the same foods.

The brain needs amino acids, fatty acids, cholesterol, minerals, glucose, and ATP. Tissue that makes steroids needs cholesterol and reducing power. Synapses need phospholipids. Raw animal foods supply those without the heat that destroys enzymes and whey.

Raw Milk

Drink raw milk. Heat is the problem. Pasteurization destroys enzymes, whey, and the proteins that make raw milk different from heated milk.

Raw whole milk builds tissue. It supplies natural antibodies. It isolates, neutralizes, dissolves, and eliminates poisons and toxins. It prevents and reverses malnutrition. The bacteria that grow in raw milk help the body dump accumulated toxins, mutant cells, and decay. Raw cream feeds the brain and nerves. Without raw dairy, more raw meat is needed to hold the same strength.

Pick One Arena and Define the Win

Choose one domain where the result matters and can be measured: strength, a technical task, sales, writing, a hard conversation. One arena, not your whole identity. A diffuse goal gives the dopamine system no prediction error to compute, so nothing updates.

Set a pass condition before you start. The set was completed with form. The page was sent. The call happened. Fix the standard in advance so the outcome is a real signal and not a story you edit afterward. Do not raise the bar after a win to keep contempt, or drop it after a loss to keep comfort.

Separate Control From Noise

Split the situation into what your action changes and what it does not. Preparation, technique, timing, and recovery are yours. Another person, the weather, and market randomness are not. This is the same variable the stress work turns on: a controllable challenge trains the medial prefrontal circuit; an uncontrollable one trains helplessness through the dorsal raphe. If the arena is mostly random, score a process metric you control and treat the external result as data.

Set the Difficulty

Aim for uncertainty where strategy still matters. Guaranteed success produces almost no dopamine prediction error, so it teaches little. Near-impossible failure driven by things you cannot control teaches nothing useful either. Correct difficulty is the range where you can answer one question afterward: which specific action changed the probability of the result.

Predict, Then Act Under Arousal

Write the prediction before you act: confidence, the likely failure point, the planned response. A recorded prediction stops the brain from rewriting history, and a win against an explicit low prediction is the largest positive prediction error, which is exactly what drives dopaminergic value updating.

Do not wait for fear to disappear. The target is organized action while mobilized. Raised heart rate, faster breath, and narrowed attention are inputs to regulate, not proof of incapacity. Use a behavioral cue, not a slogan: eyes on the first action, exhale, begin. The cue closes the gap between state and movement.

Capture the Result Immediately

Record it before memory turns into myth: what worked, what failed, what was controllable, what surprised you, what one variable changes next. This is the explicit version of prediction error, written down so the next attempt can use it.

Repeat, Then Raise One Variable

Repeat the causal behavior while the association is fresh. The nervous system strengthens whatever pattern fired with the reward, so feed it the correct pattern, not just the celebration. After the behavior is stable, raise exactly one dimension: load, duration, complexity, social exposure, or speed. Change one thing at a time or you lose attribution. This is progressive overload of agency.

Consolidate

Eat to recover. Get bright light in the day and a dark room at night. Sleep long enough for your own need. Sleep is where slow oscillations, spindles, and replay convert the day's win into a stored prior, and where testosterone recovers. The contest and the recovery are one unit, not two.
